about

This song tips it's hat to the work of Rickie Lee Jones and was the first track recorded at our loft studio in Bondi where we had to stop recording often for the barking of dogs and drunks in the street :-) Kerrie Biddell loved this version and it led to her also recording it which led to a life long friendship.

lyrics

Is that Jazz © Lyrics and music Tony King 1993

Sounds like there’s a werewolf living in your throat
A little brown bag of something in your coat
you wanna sing along but the melody’s absurd
Zooobe doodoo do do
Did you forget the words
Is that Jazz
Is that Jazz
Is that Jazz

You can turn up on time but the notes aren’t on the beat
There’s a little cellar door down the laneway ’cross the street
He smokes four packs a day but his saxophone smokes five
It’s only curiosity that’s keeping him alive
Is that Jazz
Is that Jazz
Is that Jazz

They’re sleeping in chairs
Living in beds
A used needle playing Billy in their heads
‘round and ‘round the mulberry bush
trying to find a park
You hear more black notes on a piano after dark

Is that the banjo players Ferrari?
I believe it’s his manager’s

The sun goes down but it’s time to get up
And measure some more pleasure into a coffee cup
People breath in but they forget to breath out
Is their a Count or a Duke or a Doctor in the House
Is that Jazz
Is that Jazz
Is that Jazz
That’s what they tell me
that’s Jazz
Soo oh oh they tell me that’s Jazz

about

Beautifully Mad Sydney, Australia

Breathtaking original music reminiscent of the beauty of James Taylor, some honey from Melody Gardot, a lyrical spice of Cohen washed down with some Waits-like humour. A musical flame that licks at the heels of Folk and Jazz
